Institutsgebäude

Institutsgebäude is a planned University of Heidelberg building at Fauler Pelz, near Heidelberg Castle in the southern Old Town. The 950-square-metre site lies within a former prison yard, surrounded by historic landmarks and protected heritage.

The building will bring together the Institute for European Art History, its libraries, the Research Center on Antiziganism, and the Chair for East European History. Its planned 1,528 square metres of usable space will support teaching, research, shared resources, and interdisciplinary work. Sustainability, energy efficiency, accessibility, and heritage protection shape the design, while an architectural competition selected the proposal.

The project carries a construction budget of more than 13 million euros and forms part of Heidelberg University’s modernisation plans. Here, contemporary academic facilities are planned beside one of the city’s most recognisable historic settings.
