Heiligenbergturm
Heiligenbergturm is a 16.5-metre observation tower on the Michelsberg above Heidelberg. Sandstone blocks shape its nearly square lower section and round upper structure, rising beside the remains of Stephanskloster.
The tower was built in 1885 from stones taken from the monastery ruins, which date back to Stephanskloster’s foundation in 1094. A stone staircase reaches the open eastern platform at 4.6 metres, while a spiral staircase leads to the main viewing platform at about 15.25 metres. From there, you can see the Neckar valley, Königstuhl, Heidelberg Castle and the old town.
Forest paths connect the tower with the ruins of St Michael’s and St Stephen’s monasteries, the Thingstätte and the 184-kilometre HW7 trail. Its most distinctive detail is the transition from a square sandstone base to a round tower, topped by a battlemented parapet.
