The English Theatre of Hamburg
The English Theatre of Hamburg brings professional English-language performances to Hamburg, Germany, from a historic building in Mundsburg. Its programme moves between gripping drama and comedy. Professional actors from London give British and American plays a performance style associated with the West End.
Robert Rumpf and Clifford Dean founded the theatre in 1976, making it Germany’s oldest professional English-language theatre. Performances first took place at different venues across Hamburg. Altona became its temporary home in 1979, before the theatre moved to Mundsburg in 1981. The venue occupies the former Hammonia Bad, a medicinal-bath building protected as a listed monument since 1971.
Paul Glaser has led its artistic work since 2017, directing adaptations such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Woman in Black. In 2022, he wrote and directed a stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, which premiered there. The nonprofit organisation depends on donations and support from patrons. The former Hammonia Bad places English-language theatre inside a building once known for medicinal baths.
