Holi Hamburg

Holi Hamburg is a cinema in Hamburg’s Harvestehude district, with a bright red sign facing the street. Its frontage recalls an American diner from the 1950s. The location gives the cinema a visible place within Hamburg’s cultural landscape, combining a historic exterior with current film screenings.

The cinema opened in 1951 and remains the Cinemaxx group’s only traditional cinema. Its programme centres on artistic films and powerful storytelling rather than mainstream blockbusters. Opera and ballet broadcasts also appear. These presentations connect Hamburg with venues including London’s Royal Opera House and New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Much of the original interior decoration survives, preserving the atmosphere of its early years.

Both screening rooms use 4K digital projection and Dolby Digital sound. The Greta & Starks apps offer support for visually and hearing-impaired guests, although wheelchair access remains incomplete. Hall One contains a sequinned curtain, hand-painted by Friedrich Schwiek with Hamburg landmarks and protected as a historic monument. Its restored fabric remains the clearest detail of this cinema’s past.
