Galerie Commeter
Galerie Commeter is Hamburg’s oldest privately run gallery, established in 1821 in Hamburg, Germany. Inside, you encounter contemporary paintings, graphics, sculptures, and photography within a longstanding Hamburg art setting. Its programme spans several media, giving modern art a broader shape than a single-format exhibition.
The gallery has formed part of Hamburg’s cultural landscape since the nineteenth century, while continuing to present contemporary art. An early twentieth-century exhibition of Edvard Munch’s works connects the venue with a notable chapter in art history. That presentation sparked controversy about the framing of Munch’s paintings, making their display part of the gallery’s story.
