Deutsches Schauspielhaus
Deutsches Schauspielhaus stands in St. Georg, Hamburg, as a historic spoken-word theatre designed by Austrian architects Fellner & Helmer. Franziska Ellmenreich co-founded it. Construction took place between 1899 and 1900, giving the building its place in Hamburg’s theatrical history. The doors opened in 1901.
Its programme brings together premieres, varied productions and collaborations with other cultural institutions. Junges Schauspielhaus began in 2005 for children and young people. In 2010, the stage hosted The Infernal Comedy, written and performed by John Malkovich and directed by Michael Sturminger. The production explored Austrian serial killer Jack Unterweger.
Renovation work in 2013 and 2014 updated the facilities while preserving the historical architecture. Karin Beier has served as artistic director since the 2013–14 season, shaping the theatre’s programming. Wheelchair access adds a practical welcome to this landmark in Hamburg’s multicultural St. Georg quarter.
