Centrum Moschee

Centrum Moschee stands in Hamburg’s St. Georg district as a mosque and cultural centre for the local Islamic community. Its dome and two minarets define the building’s silhouette. Religious activity connects here with education, social engagement, and dialogue. The mosque follows an open-mosque principle, welcoming visitors and supporting understanding between communities.

Turkish guest workers established the mosque in 1977, after purchasing a former bathhouse called Bath Hammonia. The original building connects with the later structure. Construction of the new section began in 1990, and the 1992 groundbreaking included Turkey’s then prime minister, Necmettin Erbakan. In 2001, the community adopted the name Islamische Gemeinde Hamburg, Centrum-Moschee e.V.

A 2009 art project transformed the minarets with green and white hexagons, created through collaboration with artist Boran Burchardt. Those geometric patterns turned architectural features into a widely noticed artwork. BIG and Schura Hamburg connect the mosque with Muslim communities across northern Germany. The minarets carry the site’s most distinctive detail: green and white hexagonal patterns.
