Hậu Lâu
Hậu Lâu stands within Thang Long Imperial Citadel in Hà Nội, Vietnam, about one hundred metres beyond Doan Gate. Its exterior presents Vietnamese architectural details amid the spacious ruins and historic buildings of the citadel. Thang Long is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with excavated remains from several eras displayed across its grounds.
The tower served as a waiting room for the emperor’s concubines and female attendants. Its position beyond the gate places that former court space close to the ruins’ entrance. Inside, a narrow, steep staircase leads to three rooms. The central room resembles an altar and contains wood carvings with stylish lighting.
The surrounding citadel served as a Vietnamese dynastic capital for a long period. Eastern and Western architectural styles coexist across its buildings and archaeological remains. A narrow, steep staircase forms the clearest transition from the open ruins to the tower’s three-room interior.
