Cửa Bắc

Cửa Bắc, also called the North Gate, stands in Hà Nội as a surviving Nguyễn-Dynasty citadel gate. Its construction dates to 1805 under the Nguyễn Dynasty. Built on an earlier Lê-Dynasty foundation, the gate forms part of the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The structure has an almost square block and a trapezoidal profile. A brick archway supports a wooden watchtower pavilion with an eight-roof design above the gate. Lotus motifs and Chinese characters mark the gate’s surfaces. Artillery scars and bullet holes remain from the French attack during the 1882 invasion. The tower honours Nguyễn Tri Phương and Hoàng Diệu. Both national heroes defended the citadel against French forces, giving the structure a memorial dimension. A surrounding moat adds another visible element. Archaeological discoveries reveal traces of earlier dynasties, extending the site’s story beyond the Nguyễn period. The surviving masonry records Hà Nội’s layered past.
