Schloss Friedenstein

Schloss Friedenstein rises above the landscape on a hill, with pale walls and broad gardens shaping the view. Duke Ernst the Pious commissioned the residence during wartime. Its original layout preserves grand ducal apartments, a chapel, and rooms with Baroque and classical details. The castle remained standing through war and later generations. Inlaid floors and ornate stucco ceilings show the craftsmanship preserved inside Schloss Friedenstein. The west tower holds the Ekhof Theatre and its original stage machinery. Conrad Ekhof helped shape the theatre’s artistic history, which still belongs to the castle’s architectural story. The ducal Kunstkammer gathers gold, silver, ivory, and glass. Its collections connect art with natural history through fossils and works of world art. The Gotha art theft marked a serious loss. Stolen Old Master paintings later returned, linking the collection to a documented episode of recovery. The preserved rooms place ducal life beside theatre, collecting, fossils, and gardens within a single architectural setting. Schloss Friedenstein keeps these elements together today.
