Arnoldi Denkmal
Arnoldi Denkmal is a neo-classical column honouring Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi, a merchant and pioneer of German insurance. Its solid form carries Arnoldi’s name, while four reliefs turn his career into visible symbols.
Crossed torches with laurel represent glory, the caduceus points to trade, and stars accompany a classical building bearing the Latin phrase “ex cinere integrum resurgit”. Dates including 1817 and 1829 mark insurance institutions Arnoldi founded, linking the stonework to his work as the “father of German insurance”. First unveiled in 1843, the column stood for almost a century before roadworks dismantled it in 1969.
Citizens and local historians recovered its scattered parts, and restoration returned the monument to public view in 2003. Look closely at the classical building and its inscription: “from ashes, it rises anew” also describes the monument’s own return.
