Xhamia e Teqes

Xhamia e Teqes stands in Gjirokastra, Albania, among a cityscape of stone houses, a historic bazaar, and layered monuments. Its domed prayer hall reflects the Albanian mosque type known as “xhami e tipit sallë me kupolë.”

Evliya Çelebi described the mosque in the seventeenth century, while Ahmet Çelebi shaped the building seen today in 1773. An inscription dates part of its history to 1732 and 1733, corresponding to the Islamic year 1145. Local people also call it the Mesh Mosque, linking the building to Gjirokastra’s religious and community life.

The mosque survived the demolition threats faced by many religious buildings in Albania after 1967. Cultural Monument status granted in 1973 secured its place within the city’s Ottoman-era architectural heritage.
