Kisha e Shpërfytyrimit
Kisha e Shpërfytyrimit stands in Gjirokastra’s old bazaar district, directly below the city castle. You see a restored Orthodox basilica with three aisles, layered stone walls, carved masonry details, and a roof covered in stone tiles.
Built in 1784, the church once served as the local Orthodox bishop’s seat and became known as the Old Metropolis. Barrel vaults span the interior, while the stone construction connects it to Gjirokastra’s UNESCO-listed architectural character. The building became a first-category cultural monument in the 1960s, then endured forty-six years of abandonment before restoration revived both its structure and its religious heritage.
The castle rises above the surrounding historic buildings, placing this church within the daily life and long history of the bazaar quarter. Its stone tiles and tunnel-like vaults leave the clearest impression.
