Fico House

Fico House is a traditional residence in Gjirokastra’s old city, where thick stone walls and family homes shape the streetscape. Its yellow exterior makes it easy to recognise, and its prominent position has placed it in many postcards and photographs of the city.

Built in 1902, the house follows local architectural traditions with simpler interior and exterior decoration than older, more ornate residences. A central attic occupies the middle of the top floor, an unusual arrangement among Gjirokastra’s historic homes. The upper level may have served storage or living needs, while the broader layout accommodated extended family life.

A stone bridge connects the house with a neighbouring residence that belonged to relatives. That elevated link offers a tangible detail of how closely families could live, sharing movement between their homes without stepping outside.
