Shoket e lirisë

Shoket e lirisë stands in a central area of Gjakova, Kosovo, as a memorial for those who died seeking Kosovo’s freedom and independence. Five red pillars rise at different heights above the city. Their varied heights represent contributions and sacrifices made across different periods of the struggle. Bronze UÇK insignia appears near the pillars’ base.

The monument emerged from a public competition, with citizens choosing a design by Gjakova architect Ideal Vejsa and Maden Group. A temporary stone once marked the memorial’s purpose in the city park. The red surfaces recall blood and sacrifice, while the five pillars form a collective image of unity. Ceremonies begin here during Gjakova’s liberation anniversary, followed by visits to martyrs’ cemeteries and other commemorative gatherings. Over time, the site has also hosted public events, protests and community acts of remembrance.
