Baumgarten

Baumgarten is a public park in Füssen, set on a hill beside the Burghügel of Hohes Schloss. About 300 metres long and more than 100 metres wide, it lies between the Lech, the castle, and the wooded Kobel ridge. The artificial rock cut called the Morisse separates the park from Kobel, while a footbridge crosses towards the road to Bad Faulenbach.

Its history reaches from Roman routes to monastic cultivation and modern waterworks. The Via Claudia Augusta may have passed through this area, which some historians associate with Damasia, the Likatier capital. Monks later grew herbs here and briefly attempted viticulture, while a probable baroque garden occupied the ridge in the seventeenth century. Around 1900, Füssen created a raised water reservoir, walking paths, planted areas, and a wooden pavilion.

The reservoir stands beside an artificial ruin and the Brunnhaus, designed in 1897 by Munich architect Beeckmann. Its grotto once carried water over stepped cascades, leaving a distinctive reminder of Baumgarten’s changing roles.
