Alatsee

Alatsee is a mountain lake in the Allgäu Alps, near Füssen in Bavaria, Germany. Dense forest surrounds Alatsee within a nature reserve.

The lake lies at 868 metres, covers about twelve hectares, and reaches 32 metres at its deepest point. Its water layers remain partly separate throughout the lake.

This meromictic structure creates unusual biological conditions in the chemically distinct lower water. A reddish blood cloud can appear there.

Microorganisms produce this phenomenon, which contributes to Alatsee’s unusual natural history and mysterious reputation. A shaded circular path follows the shore.

Nearby trails connect Alatsee with the Faulenbach valley, Saloberalpe, and routes through the surrounding Allgäu Alps. Two bathing spots lie on the western and eastern shores.

The lakeside hotel and restaurant provide meals, refreshments, and overnight accommodation beside Alatsee. The forested setting supports walking, cycling, picnics, and birdwatching.

The Faulenbach valley ends at the lake, which marks the valley’s upper boundary. Alatsee also appears in Seegrund, an Allgäu thriller by Kobr and Klüpfel.
