Holbeinpferdchen
Holbeinpferdchen stands at the corner of Günterstalstraße and Holbeinstraße in Wiehre, a suburb of Freiburg im Breisgau. Werner Gürtner created the concrete foal in 1936, giving it a height and length of 1.9 metres. Nearly one tonne of concrete gives the sculpture a solid presence on the street corner.
Since around 1980, anonymous artists have regularly repainted the figure at night. New colours and patterns transform its appearance, turning a permanent landmark into an artwork that keeps changing. The playful tradition reflects local creativity and gives passers-by a different foal to discover over time.
The sculpture represents a foal rather than a full-grown horse, and its compact proportions make that clear. Concrete, 1.9 metres, and almost one tonne define this distinctive Wiehre landmark.
