Doppelrolle
Doppelrolle stands in Freiburg im Breisgau, a city at the edge of the Black Forest. Freiburg combines medieval architecture with modern art installations, creating a setting where historical landmarks meet contemporary cultural life. Two intertwined rolls form the sculpture’s defining image, with their curved surfaces locked closely together.
Olaf Metzel created this public sculpture to explore relationships between paired spheres. Its forms connect academia and research, science and industry, biosphere and technosphere. These pairings invite you to consider how separate systems depend on one another. The accessible setting lets anyone encounter the work in public space. A challenge to familiar viewpoints runs through this sculpture, as its physical structure turns connection into something you can see.
