Evangelische Kirche Frechen
Evangelische Kirche Frechen stands in Frechen, on the left bank of the Rhine around Cologne, as a Protestant church. Its congregation reaches back to 1575 and follows a Reformed tradition. The surviving building, inaugurated in 1717, is the oldest existing church built by Protestant Christians in this area.
Early services took place in private homes before a house church united the pastor’s residence and worship space. Dutch, English, and Cologne congregations supported its construction. Visitors from Cologne and elsewhere later found accommodation here as the building expanded, while the church became a centre for worship and shared life.
The pulpit inside remains the only surviving piece of the original house church. Its protected historical status connects the interior with the congregation’s sixteenth-century beginnings. A trumpet-bearing Geusen angel recalls a tradition of resistance and perseverance.
