Denkmal an ehemalige Synagoge Rödelheim

The Denkmal an ehemalige Synagoge Rödelheim stands in Frankfurt’s Rödelheim district, at the entrance to Brentanopark. It marks the site of a former synagogue. That synagogue was consecrated in 1838 and destroyed during the November 1938 pogroms. The memorial recalls the Jewish community of Rödelheim. Artist Christof Krause created the memorial, which was erected in 1979 as a warning and place of remembrance. Its red sandstone gives the memorial a direct physical presence. On the stone pedestal, a small sculpture shows naked figures pressed closely together, evoking concentration-camp prisoners facing extermination. The square stone base rises above the sculpture. Carved inscriptions identify the former synagogue, mourn deported and murdered Jewish citizens, and connect remembrance with a passage from Lamentations. The rear inscription records the memorial’s warning in stone. Together, the sculpture, pedestal, and inscriptions preserve the memory of Nazi persecution in Rödelheim. The memorial links a park entrance with a precise historical marker.
