Bernardus Kirche

Bernardus Kirche, also known as St Bernhard, stands in Frankfurt’s Nordend as a Roman Catholic church. Hans Rummel designed the church in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its cross-shaped plan, towers and prominent dome give the building a clear architectural profile. Construction began in 1905, and consecration followed in 1907. Inside, monolithic columns made from Fichtelgebirge granite accompany colourful stained-glass windows designed by August Göbel. Some Byzantine paintings by Heinrich Nüttgens also survive. Air raids damaged the church during the Second World War, after which repairs and later renovations reshaped its interior. A major redesign followed in the late 1960s. The organ, installed in 1928 and later refurbished, remains part of the church’s musical history. Its bells were originally cast in 1907, then replaced and restored. Bernardus Kirche serves as a parish within the Dompfarrei St Bartholomäus and hosts worship, community gatherings and cultural events. The parish connection places the church within Frankfurt’s wider religious community.
