Alte Oper
The Alte Oper stands in Frankfurt’s Innenstadt, within the Bankenviertel, as a concert hall and former opera house. Berlin architect Richard Lucae designed the original building.
Frankfurt’s citizens financed its construction, which produced an opera house inaugurated in 1880. Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni formed the house’s opening performance.
War damage left the building in ruins for decades before reconstruction restored its cultural role. Public protest protected the site from replacement by an office building.
A citizens’ initiative raised fifteen million Deutsche Marks and helped finance the reconstruction. The Alte Oper reopened in 1981 after reconstruction.
Its programme history includes premieres of Schreker’s Der ferne Klang and Orff’s Carmina Burana. The venue presents classical music, jazz, pop, and rock.
The venue also contains a large hall, the Mozart-Saal, and smaller spaces for conventions. Opernplatz remains a gathering place outside the building.
The Alte Oper is wheelchair accessible and remains a cultural landmark in Frankfurt.
