Anger 1

Anger 1 is a shopping centre at the northeastern end of Anger, in the heart of Erfurt. Its Jugendstil building stands beside a contemporary extension and parking garage. Together, these parts place early twentieth-century architecture beside a modern retail setting in central Erfurt. The spot belongs to the architecture category and is wheelchair accessible.

The original Kaufhaus Römischer Kaiser was built between 1906 and 1908 for the Tietz department-store business. Architects Albert and Ernst Giese designed the original building. Its four-storey steel frame carried a sandstone facade and two corner towers, with an illuminated globe between them. The Tietz family, a Jewish merchant family from Berlin, financed much of the construction. Later expansions, public ownership, and changes involving Hertie and Karstadt marked its history. Renovation and extension between 1999 and 2000 formed the shopping centre recorded here. The centre combines specialty shops with a Karstadt department store.

Between the towers, an illuminated globe signalled the connection with Tietz department stores.
