Vleugel

Vleugel is a grand piano in Eindhoven, the large, wing-shaped instrument built for concert halls and music venues. Its polished case, long strings, and keyboard support performances at places such as Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. In this city, the instrument connects musical performance with careful craftsmanship and the demanding work of professional pianists. Each piano develops a slightly different sound because much of its construction receives individual handwork.

Selecting a concert instrument involves more than listening for a beautiful tone: pianists also test its touch and response. Boris Giltburg joined the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven team in Hamburg while they visited Steinway & Sons. Under the stage, climate-controlled storage protects the piano from humidity and smoke-machine effects during concerts. Regular tuning, inspections, repairs, and restoration preserve the sound while the strings remain under constant tension. After about ten years, an older concert piano can continue its musical life elsewhere rather than disappearing from use.
