Sint-Martinuskerk

Sint-Martinuskerk stands in Eindhoven’s Tongelre district, near the old village core and visible from the nearby main street. Emmanuel Corbey designed this Roman Catholic church in 1891 as a neo-Gothic basilica. Its three aisles and crossing form a cruciform plan beneath brick walls and slate-covered roofs. An octagonal turret rises above the crossing, while two square entrance towers remain shorter because construction never reached their planned height.

The three-part façade centres on a layered pointed-arch portal with double wooden doors and wrought-iron decoration. Above it, a tile tableau shows Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar. A stained-glass rose window and clock face complete the upper façade, while side walls carry buttresses and three-part windows. Inside, brick ribbed vaults rest on pillars with sandstone capitals carved by G.H. Mestrum in 1890.

Biblical scenes fill the choir windows, created in 1900 by Nicolas from Roermond. The interior also preserves a fifteenth-century wooden crucifix and a polychrome Saint Martin on horseback from around 1560. Two bells remain in the towers: one cast by Gobbel Moer in 1467, the other by Alexis Petit in 1752. At the choir’s rear, J. Custers’s French-sandstone neo-Gothic high altar dates from 1919.
