Radiomonument
Radiomonument stands in Stadswandelpark, in southern Eindhoven, as a brick, copper and granite monument to radio communication. Dirk Roosenburg and Albert Termote created the structure, which Eindhoven unveiled in 1936 after selecting their design from 55 national competition entries.
A bronze female figure faces forward with an open mouth and flowing hair, evoking a voice sending a message across distance. Granite reliefs on the rear show Dutch and Indonesian people, while inscriptions recall the first radio connection between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. Philips engineers achieved that shortwave link on 11 March 1927, and Queen Wilhelmina’s first conversation with the Dutch East Indies followed that spring.
The monument carries the creators’ name Semper Tangens, meaning “always touching”. Its unveiling by Princess Juliana included music, speeches and a grey covering that she removed during the ceremony.
