Koetshuis De Laak

Koetshuis De Laak is a coach house within Huize De Laak, the historic villa estate associated with Anton Philips in Eindhoven. The estate connects architecture with the history of Philips.

Anton Philips commissioned the main villa from architect Wilhelm Hanrath, who designed it in the tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch classicism. Villa construction began the following year at Huize De Laak.

Leonard Springer designed the surrounding grounds with tree groups, lawns, winding paths, exotic plants, and the Dommel river. The estate included an orangery, tennis court, orchard, vegetable garden, and children’s playground.

Huize De Laak became a setting for Philips meetings, receptions, celebrations, and visits from prominent guests. Employees called the villa the Soestdijk of Eindhoven.

During the First World War, Anna Philips supported the local Red Cross and sheltered Belgian refugees at the villa. The estate also influenced Eindhoven’s development through housing, infrastructure, schools, and hospital support connected with Anton Philips.

The coach house remains part of a complex whose buildings and grounds reflect family life, business history, and Eindhoven’s growth. Koetshuis De Laak therefore offers an architectural view of the relationship between the Philips family, their company, and the city.
