Jan van Hooff
Jan van Hooff stands in Eindhoven as a bronze statue by Auke Hettema, unveiled in 1992. The figure wears eighteenth-century clothing and carries a saber. A large granite pedestal gives the sculpture a prominent place in the city, while its pose conveys determination rather than heroism.
The monument portrays Johan Frederik Rudolph van Hooff, born in Eindhoven in 1755 and remembered as a patriot, mayor, and political figure. He led local opponents of the House of Orange and endured several imprisonments during the revolutionary upheavals. A clerical error in Paris saved him from execution in 1794. He later served in the National Assembly and held government positions, including Minister of Justice and Police under Louis Napoleon.
Citizens, businesses, and local authorities funded the sculpture after Dr Frans Verhagen proposed a tangible link with Eindhoven’s past. Its bronze surface rests above basalt lava and granite, combining several distinct materials. One clenched fist and the other hand on his hip sharpen the impression of resolve. The pedestal carries the inscription: “Jan van Hooff 1755–1816, fighter for freedom.”
