St. Michael

St. Michael stands in Kirchberg, now part of Eggenfelden, as a Roman Catholic church serving the village community. Its Gothic appearance dates from the fifteenth century, and the choir displays the number 1481. The choir and nave share the same height, while the nave extends only slightly wider beneath a net-ribbed vault. Seventeenth-century wall paintings add colour and depth to the interior.

A tower rises beside the choir’s north side, joining a square lower section to an octagonal upper storey. An eight-sided pointed spire completes this distinctive nineteenth-century silhouette. Nineteenth-century Neo-Gothic work, a major modernisation in 1972, and restoration in 2015 each left visible traces. The later restoration introduced new interior arrangements, small artworks by Joseph Michael Neustifter, and climate control to protect the paintings.

The altar was consecrated again in 2015, and the building now belongs to the Eggenfelden parish as an Expositur. Bavarian heritage protection recognises its historical and artistic value. Look upward inside, where 1481 links the quiet village church to its late-Gothic beginnings.
