Grey Tower

Grauturm rises in Germany as a square stone gate tower above the former fortifications. Five storeys and a height of forty-three metres give its strong outline a clear purpose. It once marked an exit through the town wall, separating protected streets from the road beyond.

Upper levels opened views across rooftops and countryside, where the Türmer watched the horizon. That elevated workplace helped regulate daily life by observing movement and communicating important signals. Eight towers once shaped the defensive ring, with Saint Lawrence parish church standing at its centre. Several disappeared during the nineteenth century, leaving this survivor as a reminder of the larger system.

After restoration in 1985, the tower-keeper tradition returned through Armin Dominkas and Dietmar Hofmann. Tower keepers announce the time with a buffalo horn during celebrations, tours, and guided visits. The sound connects the height above the wall with a working custom that remains visible and audible. Its square base still makes the former boundary easy to read from the surrounding streets.
