Stummhaus
Stummhaus rises in Düsseldorf as a high-rise shaped by brick expressionism and Paul Bonatz’s architectural vision. Red brick gives the façade its strong presence.
Built between 1922 and 1924, the building uses prominent triangular pillars to draw the eye upward. Bonatz described this vertical design as “office building Gothic.” Commissioned by the Stumm-Konzern, it became the headquarters of Vereinigte Stahlwerke in 1928. War damage led to restoration between 1949 and 1951, while heritage protection has safeguarded the building since 1983.
Renovations around the turn of the millennium restored its historical appearance, including wooden window frames. The southern section now contrasts natural stone with the main structure’s red brick.
