St. Nikolaus

St. Nikolaus stands in Düsseldorf’s Himmelgeist district as a Roman Catholic parish church among the city’s oldest churches. Its origins reach back to the early tenth century. The present building began in the eleventh century as a late Romanesque basilica without a tower or choir house. Later additions introduced a tower, a choir house, and Gothic vaulting.

The church appears in a document from 904 as a filial church of Kaiserswerth Abbey. Its twelfth-century choir has a ribless cross vault, while the early Gothic nave carries a ribbed vault. Romanesque clerestory windows remain bricked up above the groin-vaulted side aisles. War damage and the collapse of the tower spire led to restoration completed in 1967, followed by renovation in 1974.

Franz Pauli created the stained-glass windows in 1967 and 1968. The choir contains two sacrament houses beside these coloured windows. A Johannes Klais organ from 1938 has seventeen registers across two manuals and a pedal. Orgelbau Seifert thoroughly renovated the instrument in 2022, preserving a working detail from the church’s long architectural history.
