St. Benediktus
St. Benediktus stands in Düsseldorf-Heerdt, one of the oldest districts on Düsseldorf’s left bank of the Rhine. The Roman Catholic church presents an early Lower Rhine example of neo-Gothic architecture.
Heinrich Johann Freyse designed the current building, constructed between 1844 and 1847 after a Romanesque predecessor was demolished. Its three-aisled hall has brick-vaulted ceilings, while the neo-Gothic high altar carries Heinrich Lauenstein’s scene of Mary and John beneath the cross. Renaissance pulpit elements from 1600 remain inside, alongside stained-glass windows replaced during the 1950s after wartime damage.
A Späth organ from 1983 adds 32 registers to the interior, and the tower carries a clock with golden hands on a white square background on all four sides. The church remains the only one with a Benedikt patronage in the Archdiocese of Cologne.
