Phoenix-Haus
Phoenix-Haus stands in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt as a heritage-listed administrative building shaped by brick expressionism. Its three-wing complex presents a grid-like brick façade, diamond patterns, and three round arches. Rectangular windows sit above the entrance, with round windows rising beneath a classicist triangular gable.
Phoenix AG commissioned the headquarters after moving to Düsseldorf in 1922, and Karl Beck’s design won the architectural competition. Karl Wach directed construction from Beck’s plans after Beck died. Built between 1923 and 1926, the complex later became an employment office until 1995. Phoenix AG merged into Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG in 1926. World War Two damaged the building and removed its roof, but the original structure survived. An intact main staircase remains inside.
Ludwig Gies’s sculptures join stucco ceilings, doors, and lamps among the surviving interior features. Heritage protection followed in 1988, and renovation expanded the complex in 2002. The renovated complex serves as the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor’s Office.
