Johanneskirche

Johanneskirche stands at Martin-Luther-Platz in Düsseldorf as the city’s largest Protestant church, with Romanesque Revival architecture. Its tower rises almost eighty-eight metres above the surrounding cityscape. Construction took place between 1875 and 1881, establishing the church as a major architectural presence in central Düsseldorf. The Second World War brought severe damage to the building. Restoration returned Johanneskirche to use in 1953, and its last major remodelling took place in 2008. Its bells preserve histories reaching back to earlier centuries. One dates from 1782, while another dates from 1860. Three further bells were cast in 1952, adding another layer to the church’s material history. Visitors enter the church through a café. The building therefore connects historic worship with a contemporary public setting. Johanneskirche also hosts classical choral and orchestral concerts. The Johanneskantorei and Düsseldorf Chamber Choir perform under Johanneskantor Wolfgang Abendroth’s direction. Its central setting supports large productions and festivals alongside cultural use. Wheelchair access adds a practical feature to this historic Düsseldorf landmark.
