Schloss Nickern
Schloss Nickern stands in Nickern, southeastern Dresden, on the remains of a twelfth-century water castle. You would see a castle shaped by Renaissance, rural Baroque and later changes.
The Alnpeck family transformed the medieval stronghold into a Renaissance castle in 1511. Hans von Bose remodelled it in rural Baroque style in 1693, while the tower followed in 1870. Housing replaced private ownership after the Second World War, and a fire damaged parts of the building in 1960. During the 1980s, the rooms served as a club and cultural centre, then Dresden renovated the castle before its sale in 2004.
Cultural events now fill the building, which also contains a room devoted to Nickern’s local history. Medieval water-castle remains gained monument protection in 1972, and the site forms part of Dresden’s Archaeological Path.
