Schauspielhaus
Schauspielhaus stands in Dresden as part of Staatsschauspiel Dresden, the state-maintained theatre of Saxony. Its complex includes the main auditorium and the studio theatre Kleine Haus. The historic building rose between 1911 and 1913, with Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau forms designed by William Lossow and Max Hans Kühne. Its architecture corresponds with the nearby Zwinger. The original Staatstheater Dresden traced its roots to the Royal Court Theatre. Stage machinery used hydraulic systems to move scenery, an advanced feature for its era. Bombing in Dresden on 13 and 14 February 1945 partially destroyed the building. Reconstruction brought the theatre back within three years, making it the first German theatre to reopen after the war. The institution established in 1983 continues the site’s theatrical role through performances and events in Dresden’s cultural life. Schauspielhaus therefore connects architectural history with the city’s continuing theatre tradition.
