Dresden Hauptbahnhof

Dresden Hauptbahnhof stands south of Dresden’s Inner Old Town, close to Prager Straße and its shopping areas. The largest passenger station in the city combines terminal platforms with through tracks on two different levels. A building set between the tracks gives the complex an unusual island-like structure.

Opened in 1898, the railway station replaced the Bohemian station and answered Dresden’s growing industrial and passenger traffic. Engineers Otto Klette and Claus Koepcke led construction after an architectural competition held in 1892. Elbe sandstone forms the masonry, while 17,000 tonnes of steel support the extensive structure.

A comprehensive restoration added translucent, Teflon-coated glass-fibre membranes above the train sheds, bringing daylight into the concourses. Dresden’s railway node links routes towards Prague, Vienna, Chemnitz, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Berlin and Görlitz. The roof’s pale surfaces create the clearest visual detail, filtering daylight across the platforms and passageways.
