Dreikönigskirche
Dreikönigskirche stands in Dresden as a Lutheran church with a Baroque exterior, prominent tower, and sculpted figures. Its tower carries images of the Four Evangelists and the Three Kings.
A church first stood here in Old Dresden, where records mention it in 1421. Hussite destruction, fire, demolition, and wartime bombing shaped the building’s long history. Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann designed the present structure between 1732 and 1739, with interiors by George Bähr. Reconstruction preserved the façade and tower while giving the interior space for community activities. Lectures, concerts, exhibitions, and the former Saxon state parliament connect the church with Dresden’s public life.
The Baroque altar carved by Johann Benjamin Thomae in 1741 survived the war, though it remains damaged. Inside, the Dresden Totentanz presents a stone relief with twenty-seven figures, including Charles V and Duke George.
