Seeberg

Seeberg is a protected nature reserve in Germany, where gentle hills, forests, meadows, and sandstone shape the landscape. Its 360 hectares hold open views alongside woodland and rolling slopes. Sandstone beneath the paths formed more than 200 million years ago, then entered the region’s building history. Stone from these quarries helped build Erfurt Cathedral and other major structures.

Walking routes pass abandoned quarries, where exposed walls preserve traces of generations of stoneworking. Reddish-grey badlands ripple along the southern edge, contrasting with the green woodland. Old mills and water channels add working landscape details, while viewpoints open towards the Drei Gleichen panorama. A hidden Cold War rocket bunker leaves an unexpected mark among the trees.
