Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof

Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof rises 43 metres above Dortmund as an expressionist water tower from the city’s railway landscape. Its brick façade conceals a reinforced-concrete skeleton, while horizontal cornices add decoration without supporting the structure. Two cylindrical concrete tanks occupy the upper third, each holding 800 cubic metres of water.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn built the tower between 1923 and 1927 for Dortmund Süd railway operations. Until the 1950s, it supplied boiler feed water for steam locomotives. Shops occupied the ground floor, while railway employees used an upper-floor bathhouse and overnight accommodation.

A renovation led by architect Ralf Schulte-Ladbeck ran from 1999 to 2000 and preserved historic elements. The converted building contains offices for architectural and advertising firms. As a cultural monument, it forms part of the Route of Industrial Heritage.
