Vincketurm
Vincketurm rises above the Syburg district of Dortmund, beside the ruins of Hohensyburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The octagonal tower reaches twenty-six metres. Its neo-Gothic form stands on the Syberg’s highest point, with panoramic views across the surrounding landscape and Ruhr sandstone walls.
Built in 1857, the tower honours Ludwig Freiherr von Vincke, Westphalia’s first Prussian provincial president. The stone gives the structure a distinctive, warm appearance. During the final days of the Second World War, German forces used it as an artillery observation post, and shellfire damaged the tower.
Restoration followed in 1955, while the nearby fortress preserves traces of a residential building and keep. Those remains recall a stronghold built around 1100 to secure the Ruhr crossing at Westhofen.
