Sankt Urbanus
Sankt Urbanus is a Roman Catholic parish church in Huckarde, a district of Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. Its west tower and nave preserve the form of a hall church begun in the mid-thirteenth century. The building presents medieval fabric beside a large neo-Romanesque extension from the late nineteenth century.
Arnold Spanke designed the extension, which was completed in 1899 after the late Gothic choir was demolished in 1897. Murals added in 1906 enrich the new section, while a buttressed choir flank tower rises on its south side. Inside, elements acquired from Dortmund’s Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist in 1665 remain among the furnishings.
Franz Breil’s organ, built in 1967, has 36 registers distributed across three manuals and a pedal. Medieval masonry, neo-Romanesque construction, twentieth-century murals, and the large organ bring several periods together beneath one roof.
