Petrikirche
Petrikirche rises on Westenhellweg in central Dortmund, beside the medieval Reinoldikirche and Marienkirche. Its High Gothic design forms an almost square urban hall church. The nave and aisles share the same height, while the short chancel keeps the layout compact.
Construction began in 1322 with light sandstone, creating a Westphalian example of hall-church architecture. The spire reaches 105 metres. War destruction removed the historic spire, and restoration returned it to its former height in 1981. Inside, the Golden Wonder of Westphalia presents a late Gothic carved altar made in 1521. When opened, its wings reveal thirty-six scenes and thirty compartments with gilded carved figures.
A historic organ from 1868 stands inside a grey glazed birch-wood cube. Orgelbau Schulte converted and ceremonially inaugurated it in 2015. Five cast-steel bells now replace the four bronze bells destroyed in 1945. The church and its historic fountain are protected monuments, and wheelchair access is available.
