Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche
The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche stands in Dortmund’s Innenstadt-Ost district as an evangelical church shaped by post-war construction. Otto Bartning designed this Type B emergency church with a polygonal altar area. Built between 1948 and 1949, it presents the restrained form associated with scarce materials and difficult rebuilding.
The young congregation began in a hall on Plauener Straße before construction started on Markgrafenstraße in autumn 1948. Despite financial difficulties, worship began in the completed church in 1950. In 1959, a bell tower joined the church, parsonage, and connecting wall. The site became a listed historical monument in 2011. Four bronze bells hang there, including two cast in the sixteenth century, the oldest bells in Dortmund’s city centre.
