Lanstroper Ei

Lanstroper Ei rises in northeastern Dortmund as a steel water tower with a K-truss frame and spherical tank. Its steel structure reaches 55.5 metres, including the supporting framework.

Aug. Klönne built the tower between 1904 and 1905 for Unna’s gas and waterworks, serving nearby coal mines and districts. The Barkhausen tank holds 2,000 cubic metres. A hemispherical base, cylindrical middle section, and hemispherical cover create the rounded steel container associated with Professor Georg Barkhausen.

Operations ended in 1981, and Dortmund listed the surviving structure as a monument in 1985 after wartime damage and years of neglect. A local association began preservation work in 1997. Dortmund acquired it in 2007, while planned repairs and a mirrored tower would support cultural and educational uses. From the wheelchair-accessible base, views extend across the surrounding landscape towards Münsterland.
