Henkersturm

Henkersturm rises in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria, within the town’s well-preserved medieval fortifications and nearly complete wall. The tower forms part of a ring of walls, gates, moats, and bastions. Dinkelsbühl retains sixteen towers and four gates around its old town.

Construction of the fortification ring began in the early thirteenth century, then expanded in 1372 as the defensive system developed. This structure dates from 1372. Its walls continued evolving until the Thirty Years’ War, creating a closed ring with inner and abandoned outer gates. A moat and lined wall complete the military setting.

Bäuerlinsturm and Dreikönigsturm stand among the other towers shaping Dinkelsbühl’s medieval character. Travelling executioners used this place for overnight accommodation. That practical detail gives the stonework a direct connection with people who came to town for their work.
