The Life Electric
The Life Electric is a contemporary sculpture by Daniel Libeskind, standing at the end of Como’s Diga Foranea pier. Its polished steel faces reflect Lake Como, the sky, and surrounding mountains.
Two opposing wave forms rise above a circular stone base, linking art with Alessandro Volta’s scientific legacy. The sculpture honours Alessandro Volta, inventor of the electric battery.
Its design evokes the electrical tension between a battery’s poles and forms a symbolic third pole. The work connects the nearby Tempio Voltiano museum and Faro Voltiano lighthouse.
A shallow pool at the base reflects the monument, while the open structure creates space for people beneath it. The Diga Foranea pier reaches into Lake Como.
A waterproof LED system illuminates the sculpture, adding light and smoke effects after dark. The promenade provides public access to the pier and its views across the lake and city.
