Arena

Arena preserves the ruins of a medieval castle in Como, among the city’s churches, historic buildings, and former fortifications. Fragments of stone walls and foundations reveal the outline of a structure built for defence and shelter. Locally sourced stone formed barriers designed to protect inhabitants during periods of conflict. Thick masonry, defensive walls, and the castle’s foundations suggest the scale of the structure that once stood here.

Over the centuries, changes in military technology and political power reduced the need for such fortifications. The abandoned castle gradually deteriorated, leaving these remains within Como’s historical landscape. Walking among the stones connects the city’s present with a period shaped by guards, sieges, and medieval rule. Each surviving fragment offers a tangible clue to the construction and layout of the former stronghold.
